How do I make an appointment to see a counselor?
The fastest way to set up a first appointment would be to call our office (651-739-7539) and speak with our Intake Specialist (either Mary Kaye or Hayes). They are typically answering phones between 9am and noon on weekdays. If you happen to get into our voice messaging system when you call, leave a message and they will call you back. Typically calls are returned the same or next business day. Our Intake Specialists have access to the calendars for all of our therapists, and will help you find a first appointment time that fits your schedule.
How much does counseling cost?
Most health insurance policies provide coverage for outpatient mental health services, including individual counseling and psychotherapy, family therapy, couples counseling, and marriage counseling. The amount that you would pay out-of-pocket varies depending on your specific health insurance policy. You can contact your health insurance company’s provider services (usually the phone number is located on the back of your health insurance card), or you can call our office and one of our Intake Specialists will help you get more detailed information about your coverage for counseling. Ultimately, as the insurance policy holder, we believe it is important that you know about your insurance coverage and that you make payments to cover your portion for services rendered. We are willing to make payment arrangements on a case-by-case basis when financial hardship would otherwise limit access to services.
What if I don’t want to use my health insurance to cover counseling?
Some people prefer not to use health insurance to cover counseling and psychotherapy services. By keeping such private interactions “off of the grid” so to speak, you can maintain an extra level of privacy, and avoid having a mental health diagnosis being attached to your health record. If you are interested in paying entirely out-of-pocket, our therapists will be happy to talk with you about payment arrangements.
Will my counseling sessions be private?
Whenever you see a mental health professional, your communication with that professional is confidential. This means that we cannot release any information about you without your written permission. However, there is an exception to this confidentiality -- if there is an immediate threat to a person’s life, we are required by Minnesota law to do what is necessary to keep people safe. Your therapist will give you more details about confidentiality in your first appointment. If you would like a copy of our confidentiality and privacy statements before setting up an appointment, we would be glad to provide you with that.
Do you prescribe medication for anxiety or depression?
No. Our therapists are psychologists, psychotherapists and counselors. Only medical doctors can prescribe medication. When you talk with one of our therapists, you can talk about whether medication might be a helpful form of treatment for the symptoms you are experiencing. Our therapists can refer you to the appropriate medical professional if medication appears to be needed.
Do you have evening or Saturday appointments?
Yes. While it is much faster to set up a first appointment if you can come to our office during the daytime hours, we do have therapists who see clients in the evenings, and sometimes on Saturdays. Our Intake Specialist can help you find an appointment time with a therapist that will work for your schedule.
What if I’m not sure if I should see a counselor?
Even if you are only thinking about talking with a counselor, it might be helpful to talk with one of our therapists just to figure that out. People come to counseling for so many different reasons, including because they are going through a lot of stress, because they just have an uneasy feeling that won’t go away, or because they don’t seem to feel as happy as they’d like to feel. Our therapists will be straight with you about whether counseling can help your specific situation or challenge.
